Let’s have some positive thinking around litter and waste. It’s nearly time for World Cleanup Day on the 20th September 2025. Yes, this is a new International Day in September. It’s in good company, joining International Equal Pay day on the 18th and International Day of Peace on the 21st of September. Started over 7 years ago, this initiative is now officially recognised by the United Nations. It took place in September last year and involved millions across the globe in a massive cleanup job.
This year it’s set to be even bigger. Want to be part of World Cleanup Day on 20 September 2025? Join millions across the globe in the “Strive for Five” campaign to spark real environmental change. This aims to involve 5% of the world’s population in everything from local cleanups to a global broadcast on that day. Organised by Let’s Do It World, the message is clear: your actions can help create a cleaner, healthier planet.
The Vision
Just imagine millions of people across 211 countries united on 20 September, cleaning up our planet together. What if we could get everyone to act on the same day?
This is exactly what Let’s Do It World, an NGO based in Estonia, with a General Assembly to govern this growing movement, have achieved
For seven consecutive years, they have turned this day from a bold idea into a global reality that mobilises over 114 million people. World Cleanup Day has earned its place on the UN Calendar of International Days—as well as several global awards.
Crazy Idea
Heidi Solba, President of Let’s Do It World, had a challenging task: to build up the biggest network in the world for World Cleanup Day. She states:
“Our idea was, what if one day we clean up all the whole world.” What seemed like a crazy idea, is now official, and they are working on projects across the world to bring about innovation. Solba believes that ‘We absolutely need to raise awareness so that people can ask themselves: what can I do?”
People Power
In the first cleanup event in Estonia in 2008, 50 thousand Estonians participated, in other words, 5% of the population. This included over 600 businesses and important political leaders. This success has spurred her on to a wider vision of not just Europe, but the whole world working together, to create a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable world. Positivity is a core value behind the World Cleanup Day. It’s easy to feel that things are spiralling out of control but there is hope for the future.
Solba states
“We advocate a sense of optimism and proactivity, believing in the power of positive thinking and the impact it has on our collective mindset.”
