Baby, it’s cold outside

Baby, it’s cold outside

With temperatures dropping, some of us are getting excited about the prospect of snow. At Lincoln Cleaning, were getting excited about our wonderful grit spreading machines. Not everyone enjoys an arctic blast, but a complete whiteout is undeniably one of Natures winter wonders. Trees become glittering beacons in a newly pristine, blanketed world.

The last time snow covered the whole country was in 2018, when the infamous Beast from the Eastpaid us a visit. Animals in the fields were buried in snowdrifts and had to be rescued and many were trapped in their homes. Every winter since then, people have speculated whether these severe conditions will return to the UK. After quite a few mild winters, are we duse another visit from the Beast?

Thousands of schools and universities closed, yet tragically, 10 people died as a result of the Beast from the East and Storm Emma. Temperatures dropped to minus 11 degrees, with a wind chill of minus 22. Baby, its really cold outside. The prolonged cold snap and heavy snow, lead to widespread travel disruption. Power cuts hit thousands of homes and military assistance was deployed. Trains were stranded on tracks and the Met office issued a rare Red weather warning to stop people from travelling. In short, the UK came to a virtual standstill.

Heavy snow? Its snow big deal outside the UK

Extreme winters are normal in many parts of the world and these countries simply expect the worst and prepare accordingly. They have the right machines for the job. When it snows in Sweden, Denmark or Latvia for example, they keep calm, carry on and roll out those gritters. In Finland, temperatures drop to minus 50 in Lapland. So thats why Father Christmas wears such a big coat!

Fail to prepare? Then prepare to fail

The Beast from the East struck in late February in 2018, after a period of mild temperatures. Just when we thought the winter was almost over, we found ourselves clearing a path from the front door and wondering if we had any de-icer in the car. So, what can be done the next time we are gripped in the icy jaws of the Beast?

Winter Maintenance with Lincoln Cleaning Technology

At Lincoln Cleaning, we can offer a range of solutions to help your winter maintenance. Prompt action in spreading salt and grit is vital. For example the 800 Tug Towed Salt Spreader can be used off-highway with site-based tugs, such as forklifts. Its hopper can take a massive 1000 kg of salt. It can be used to spread wet or dry, brown or white salt and its patented and unique POZI-FEED stainless steel auger system, means it maintains a smooth and even flow of salt.

The 1200 Tractor Towed Salt Spreader

If you need to go bigger than the 800, then the 1200 is a popular choice with winter contractors and local authorities. Its available in different sizes and can be towed at high speed by a suitable 4 by 4 vehicle. It can carry a whopping 1500kg of salt and in addition to the POZI-FEED technology, it has premium, rubberised lighting components which resist salt corrosion.
