Time for Spring Cleaning

Why is the urge to start spring cleaning so strong in April and May? Now that winter is in the rear view mirror and spring has definitely sprung, lots of us want to start deep cleaning those forgotten areas in our homes that the sunshine is so mercilessly revealing. The origins of the annual tradition of spring cleaning are more ancient than you might think. It’s not just the longer days and warmer temperatures giving us more energy and joie de vivre, there are religious and cultural reasons too.

Easter Clean

The Christian traditions of Lent and Easter also involve cleaning rituals, since the spring cleaning of the altar and the church must be completed before Good Friday. According to an old superstition though, if you wash or clean anything on the day of Good Friday it will bring you bad luck for the rest of the year. Eggs are another symbol of new life and rebirth at Easter, mostly enjoyed as chocolate versions these days of course.

Get Passover Ready

The Jewish festival of Passover also involves some serious deep cleaning since all crumbs of bread, a forbidden food during Passover, must be removed from the house. All foods containing yeast must be packed up and removed from the house, which must then be cleaned from top to bottom to become Passover ready.

Cleaning for Nowruz

Cleaning is also an essential part of The Persian New Year celebrations known as Nowruz. This festival marks the spring equinox, when night and day are of equal length, and winter turns to spring. Nowruz means new day in Persian and in Central Asia, Iran and beyond, it’s a big festival and public holiday. People prepare for this by cleaning their homes thoroughly. The whole family have to help out and then the house is decorated with flowers. There is also a lovely tradition of having a picnic outside on the last day of the 13 day holiday to celebrate the rebirth and renewal of the earth.
