Rare earth metals have been in the news a lot this month.
All eyes are on Russia to see their next move, after the Trump Zelensky rift. Ukraine is rich in rare earth metals and minerals, with Lithium, Graphite and Titanium being the most abundant. Unfortunately, they’re hundreds of metres below ground and Trump is seizing the moment to get the best deal for the USA, on the mining rights for these precious metals, all whilst Putin’s attacks continue. So why are these rare earth metals and minerals so important?
Vital in the modern world
Experts have stated that “these critical minerals are the foundation of the 21st century economy” as they’re used in the production of electronics, machinery, cars, planes, phones and more. They are key components in missiles, weapons, nuclear reactors…all the horrors of war. Titanium is a lightweight metal used in many essential things from hip replacements to aeroplanes. Graphite is used in battery electrodes and has a range of industrial uses.
In addition to significant deposits of Lithium, Graphite and Titanium, Ukraine also has Uranium and Beryllium, crucial for nuclear weapons and reactors. It also has Copper, Lead, Zinc, Silver, Nickel, Cobalt and Manganese.
The rare earth metals are a group of 17 elements that are used in the production of weapons, amongst many other military applications. Also essential in wind turbines, electronics and other products vital in the modern world.
Untapped mineral wealth
The fact that Ukraine has untapped mineral wealth certainly adds a strategic and economic dimension to Russia’s, and now America’s interests in the region. However, the majority of these minerals are untouched, as Ukraine lacks the billions of dollars of investment to begin expensive mining operations. The country has been a war zone for 3 years and has suffered crippling attacks on its citizens and borders. Significant investment and an end to the war is desperately needed. Yet, the country’s infrastructure continues to crumble under daily attacks from a very big and hostile neighbour.
The USA almost certainly wants to reduce its dependency on China, which controls over 70% of the global production of rare earths. We watch and wait.
Lithium-ion batteries
When people talk about green or emission free power, they are usually talking about Lithium-ion batteries. Lithium is not technically a rare earth metal, but it’s definitely rare. This most wanted mineral is only found in a few locations globally and the UK, like many other countries, has no supplies of its own. However demand is high for Lithium is high throughout the developed world as this new technology will help countries reduce their dependence on oil.
Lincoln Cleaning Technology specialise in the sales, service and lease of the world’s leading industrial floor cleaning machines. We are able to supply the latest industrial cleaning machines, powered by the new, super power: Lithium-ion batteries.
