Cleaner Scarborough
The ocean, azure and glittering under a blue sky is a sight to lift everyone’s mood and some of us have been lucky enough to experience it at the UK’s seaside resorts, in the fantastic run of May sunshine this year. But it’s not just about enjoying the sun, sea and sand, we expect clean streets, promenades and parks in our trips to the seaside. No-one wants to step over yesterdays fish and chip wrappings or broken glass from the beer and soft drinks bottles enjoyed by visitors on a day out. This is no easy task for seaside towns. When your town receives thousands of extra visitors every day, in the summer months, street cleaning is a major challenge.
Government steps up for Scarborough
With almost 4 million visitors a year, the popular resort of Scarborough, has just been awarded an additional £20 million, as part of a national Labour government programme of investment in towns. Scarborough is a beautiful, historic resort but some parts of the town are in need of some investment. In a recent poll, unsurprisingly, the top priority for the people of Scarborough was a cleaner, tidier town centre with well-maintained public spaces. Investment in state-of-the-art cleaning equipment was top of the list for North Yorkshire Council, in addition to other measures such as new litter bins and benches, new planting to brighten up garden areas and the creation of a town centre caretaker, to make sure everything stays spick and span. North Yorkshire’s visitor economy is worth more than £4 billion a year, with the seaside towns of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey making a significant contribution. Scarborough has been described as “the jewel in North Yorkshire’s crown” and it sounds like its going to get a good polishing this year.
£5 million boost to clean up Manchester
Instead of the glittering ocean and golden sands, residents of Manchester have the River Irwell and the Ship Canal, both distinctly brown in colour. However clean streets and green spaces are just as vital for city dwellers. The great news is that Manchester City Council is set to invest an additional £5 million in improving cleanliness in neighbourhoods around the city. The cash will be spent improving neighbourhoods through additional street cleaning, combatting fly tipping and maintaining green spaces. A brand new green space has just opened too in Ancoats Green, right in the heart of the city, with wildflower meadow areas, trees and play equipment for children. Bev Craig, Leader of the Council, said “ We’re on mission to invest more in our parks and green spaces.”
