Like everyone, we’re all counting down to spring.

Join the Great British Spring Clean
Now in its tenth year, the Great British Spring Clean campaign by Keep Britain Tidy, is due to start this month. This super organisation aims to “Eliminate litter. End waste. Improve places.” Keep Britain Tidy say “since 2016 our army of millions of amazing #LitterHeroes have shown they love where they live by pledging to pick more four million bags of litter during the Great British Spring Clean – the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign. The Great British Spring Clean and Great Big School Clean 2025 will take place from 21 March to 6 April.”
Love where you Live
In a YouGov survey carried out ahead of the Great British Spring Clean, more than 31.6 million people said ‘litter-free’ streets would help them love where they live – and 72% of UK adults said seeing litter makes them less proud of their neighbourhood. The campaign aims to encourage people to go out and pick up a bag of litter in their local area and get others to do the same. Simple. Despite tough anti-littering fines in the UK, it’s incredibly difficult to catch people in the act of dropping litter, so empowering local communities to work together is a positive way forward.
Retro Rubbish
Rubbish, that remains hidden in undergrowth for years, or simply ignored, is still doing damage to our environment as it slowly breaks down. These discarded items release greenhouse gases into the soil or waterways, as they decompose. Given that it takes around 500 years for a single plastic bottle to decompose, it is quite terrifying to think about the consequences of the 1.7 million tonnes of plastic that is produced in the UK each year. Even a single cigarette butt can take between 1 and 10 years to decompose and aluminium cans take up to 200 years to biodegrade. So let’s get spring cleaning and love where we live!
